Job Description

The iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority is offering an internship program for young graduates and students seeking practical experience in conservation, environmental management, tourism, and administration. This program provides hands-on learning opportunities within one of South Africa’s most renowned UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Interns will gain valuable exposure to biodiversity conservation, eco-tourism operations, environmental research, community engagement, and park management, all while contributing to the protection and sustainability of iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

Key Responsibilities

Interns will be placed in different departments based on their qualifications and interests. Responsibilities may include:

Environmental Conservation & Research

  • Assisting with wildlife and marine conservation projects.
  • Conducting ecological surveys and data collection.
  • Supporting habitat restoration and invasive species control.
  • Participating in environmental education programs.

Tourism & Hospitality Management

  • Supporting tourism development and visitor experience initiatives.
  • Assisting in managing eco-tourism activities, guided tours, and accommodation facilities.
  • Conducting visitor surveys and research on sustainable tourism practices.

Community Engagement & Rural Development

  • Assisting with community-based conservation projects.
  • Supporting local livelihood initiatives, such as sustainable fishing and eco-friendly agriculture.
  • Helping organize educational programs for local communities.

Administration & Finance

  • Providing clerical and administrative support to park offices.
  • Assisting in budgeting, procurement, and financial reporting.
  • Supporting HR functions, including recruitment and training coordination.

Law Enforcement & Park Protection

  • Assisting in park security and anti-poaching initiatives.
  • Supporting compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
  • Engaging in ranger patrols and surveillance activities.
Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Requirements:

  • South African citizen.
  • A completed or nearly completed diploma/degree in Environmental Science, Conservation, Tourism, Public Administration, Finance, or related fields.
  • Applicants must be between 18 and 35 years old.
  • No prior work experience is required, but a passion for environmental conservation is essential.

Preferred Skills and Attributes:

  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Interest in environmental sustainability and conservation efforts.
  • Computer literacy (MS Office proficiency is beneficial).
  • Willingness to work outdoors and in remote areas.
  • Adaptability and problem-solving skills.
