The Department of Science and Innovation – National Youth Service (DSI-NYS) Programme forms part of the broader National Youth Service initiative by the South African government. Managed by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) under the National Research Foundation, the programme aims to empower and uplift unemployed youth through practical work experience and skills development.
The DSI-NYS Programme places unemployed graduates under 35 years old in partner institutions for a 12-month internship, during which participants receive a monthly stipend to support their basic living needs.
While the programme prioritises graduates in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, limited opportunities may also be available for graduates from other disciplines, depending on institutional requirements.
This initiative promotes a culture of community service, volunteerism, and professional development, helping young people gain valuable work experience, improve employability, and contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s socio-economic growth.
